4 Essential Books for Anyone Learning Data Skills

Below are four books that had the biggest impact on my learning. Each of them taught me something different, and together they helped me connect all the dots in the Power BI world.
1. Microsoft Power BI Cookbook
by Brett Powell
This book is like having a senior Power BI mentor sitting beside you.
It’s practical, hands-on, and full of real examples.
What I love most:
- You learn how professionals actually approach problems
- It teaches you best practices, not just definitions
- Every chapter solves a real, concrete scenario
If you want to take your skills from beginner to confident practitioner, this is a must-read.
2. Storytelling with Data
by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic
This book completely changed how I design dashboards.
It teaches you how to:
- simplify visuals
- highlight what matters
- make charts intuitive
- tell a story people actually understand
After reading it, I stopped thinking about dashboards as “pretty charts” and started thinking about them as communication tools.
Start here ifyou want your reports to make sense and make an impact.
3. The Definitive Guide to DAX
by Marco Russo & Alberto Ferrari
DAX can be scary at first. This book makes it… not easy, but definitely understandable.
It explains:
- the logic behind DAX
- how the engine thinks
- why your measures behave the way they do
- patterns that you’ll use over and over again
4. Fundamentals of Data Visualization
by Claus O. Wilke
This is one of the most beautiful data books I’ve ever read – visually and conceptually.
It teaches you:
- what makes a chart clear
- which visuals are misleading
- how to communicate numbers effectively
- how to design with intention
Even though it’s not Power BI-specific, the lessons apply to every dashboard you’ll ever build.
