8 Things That Helped Me Learn Power BI (And Will Help You Too!)

Learning Power BI can feel very exciting, but sometimes a little overwhelming. So today I want to share the 8 things that helped me the most and they can guide your learning journey as well.
1. Start With a Solid Beginner-Friendly Course
My journey began with the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst course on Coursera. It’s a long course, but it gives you everything you need as a beginner: clear explanations, short videos, reading materials, quizzes, links to Microsoft documentation, hands-on exercises. It’s designed for people who have zero background in data.
2. Use Microsoft Documentation (It’s a Goldmine)
If I could give only one tip, it would be this: 👉 Use Microsoft documentation.
It’s the most accurate, complete, and reliable source. When something feels difficult, documentation is where the real answers are.
3. Learn From YouTube Creators
There are many amazing YouTubers who explain Power BI concepts in a simple way. My favorites:
• How to Power BI
• Guy in a Cube
• Kevin Stratvert
YouTube helped me understand concepts visually and stay inspired on days when reading felt too heavy.
4. Use Notion + ChatGPT for Clear Notes
This method completely changed my learning:
✨I used Notion for my notes
✨I used ChatGPT to summarize lessons
During the Coursera course, I copied important sections, pasted them into ChatGPT, and asked for a simple summary with key points. This gave me clean, organized, beginner-friendly notes.
6. Stay Consistent, Even on Bad Days
Not every day will be productive. Some days you’ll feel stuck, unmotivated, or unsure what to create. On days like that, I tell myself: “Just do 15 minutes.” It doesn’t matter if you do 15 or 30 minutes. What matters is that you showed up.
My secret motivator? 👉 I booked the PL-300 exam in advance. Once you pay… trust me, you’ll study.
7. Practice, Practice, Practice
Nothing replaces hands-on work. You can use datasets from Kaggle or Databank. But here’s the truth: I used to spend hours searching for the “perfect” dataset. Something original, beautiful and something no one has used before. But the perfect dataset doesn’t exist. Choose something that interests you (maybe related to your hobbies) and just start. The learning happens in the doing.
8. Enjoy the Process
No matter where you start, learning Power BI can be fun, it can be creative and empowering. You’re not just learning a tool. You’re learning how to solve problems, tell stories, and discover insights hidden in data.
If you’re just beginning your journey, don’t worry about being perfect or about not knowing enough. Stay consistent and enjoy exploring.
